Why this exists
Reports about VPN connectivity in Russia are usually anecdotal: "works for me", "broke yesterday". Verifiable data is scarce. We decided to measure it ourselves and publish the results together with how they were obtained, so the conclusions can be checked rather than taken on trust.
Who runs the measurements
The measurements are run by VolnaLink — by us. This is not an independent study and we will not call it one. Materials are signed "VolnaLink Research", and the continuous monitoring is labelled "VolnaLink Russia Connectivity Monitor".
Self-run monitoring has an obvious limit: we have detailed data about our own service and much less about other people's. We do not fill competitor results with guesses — if a service was not tested, we say so.
What gets published
- Methodology — operators, cities, devices, the success criterion and how the figures are calculated.
- Availability monitoring — last check plus 24-hour, 7-day and 30-day statistics.
- Russia VPN Connectivity Index — aggregated measurements and trends.
- Monthly reports and an export of the aggregated data.
Current state
Data collection has not started yet: the operator test points are still being set up. Until the first measurements, monitoring pages carry the status "not enough data". The index, monthly reports and open data will follow once statistics accumulate.
