VLESS Reality vs WireGuard

These two protocols are constantly compared, even though they solve different problems. The comparison only makes sense in relation to conditions — so let's start with what each of them actually does.

The short answer

WireGuard is faster and simpler, but its traffic is recognizable. VLESS Reality is slower, but the connection looks like an ordinary visit to a real website. On an unfiltered network WireGuard wins; on a filtered network it may not come up at all.

What each one does

WireGuard was designed for speed and compactness: about four thousand lines of code, fixed cryptography, a handshake in a single exchange. It doesn't try to hide the fact of a VPN connection — that was never a goal.

VLESS Reality is the VLESS transport with an add-on that disguises the connection as a request to an existing public website. When probed from outside, the server returns that site's genuine response along with a real certificate.

What matters more in your case

Test it on your own device

8 hours free, no card required. Full access to all servers.

Choose WireGuard if you're connecting your own devices or servers, the network isn't filtered, and the goal is maximum speed. Here disguise would only get in the way.

Choose VLESS Reality if a connection on your network may fail to establish because of traffic analysis. The speed difference doesn't matter if the tunnel doesn't come up at all.

Why «faster» isn't a universal argument

Comparing the speed of two protocols is only valid where both work. On a network where WireGuard is blocked, its theoretical advantage is zero. And vice versa: there's no point paying Reality's overhead for disguise on a network where no one filters anything.

How big the speed difference is

We don't give specific numbers: they depend on the channel, the hardware, the route, and server load, and a figure obtained on one test bench says nothing about your connection. The general direction is this: WireGuard's overhead is minimal, Reality's is higher due to TLS and disguise.

How it's handled in VolnaLink

We use VLESS Reality, Trojan, and Hysteria 2, and the app makes the choice between them — based on the network you're on. There's no manual switch: to choose deliberately, you'd need to know what's happening on a specific network right now, and a user usually doesn't have that information.

FAQ

WireGuard: it has less overhead. But that's only true where both protocols work. If the network filters connections, WireGuard may not come up.
In encryption strength they're comparable. Reality solves a different problem — making the connection inconspicuous, not stronger encryption.
At the service level — yes, the client can choose between the configured options. On a single connection, one protocol works at a time.
A deliberate choice requires knowing what's happening on a specific network at a given moment. The client determines this more precisely than a user going by feel.
We don't give a number: it depends on the channel, the device, the route, and server load. A figure from someone else's test bench says nothing about your connection.
