If a video buffers at 720p and higher even with the VPN on, first check the app itself, the current network, and the connection speed. If the problem appears only with the VPN on, the cause may be an incomplete tunnel, an overloaded server, or a poor route. Below is the order of checks, without changing all the settings at once.
Slowdown and blocking are different things
With network blocking, the page or app may fail to open or may show an error. A VPN can help in that case, but it doesn't fix a YouTube outage, an app problem, account restrictions, or insufficient connection speed.
With a slowdown, the YouTube page opens, but the video takes a long time to load, stalls, or automatically lowers the quality. The cause may be insufficient connection speed, an overloaded server, an app problem, or a poor route. A VPN helps only if the slowdown is related to the provider's route.
| Sign | Blocking | Slowdown |
|---|---|---|
| What you see | Doesn't open, error | Opens, buffers at 720p+ |
| When a VPN can help | If access is restricted by the network or provider | If the problem is related to the provider's route; the result depends on the chosen server and connection speed |
Why the VPN is on, yet YouTube still lags
| Cause | How it looks | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Only a browser extension | Better in the tab, in the YouTube app — same as without a VPN | Install VPN for Windows or VPN for PC |
| Part of the traffic bypasses the tunnel | After connecting, the public IP hasn't changed or the country doesn't match the chosen VPN location | Turn off split tunneling and check the public IP on the "My IP" page |
| The server is far away or loaded | Not only YouTube lags | Change the country in the app |
A two-minute check
- Open the video without a VPN, set the quality to 1080p, and check the loading speed.
- Check the same video on a different network and restart the app or browser. On a phone, also clear the YouTube cache.
- Connect the VPN and reopen the same video. The chosen VPN location should be shown on the "My IP" page.
- If the video loads slowly, choose another nearby location and repeat the check.
- If the problem occurs in the YouTube app, use the system-wide VolnaLink app, not the browser extension.

What to do in VolnaLink
YouTube doesn't require a separate connection mode. If you watch videos only in the browser, you can use the VolnaLink extension. For the YouTube app or the whole device, use the system-wide app.
- Connect to the nearest available location.
- Check the connection country on the "My IP" page.
- Reopen the same video and set the same video quality.
Buy a VPN on the pricing page. There's no separate "YouTube-only" plan.
