Claude Not Working: an Outage, VPN, or Account

If Claude isn't working, first open status.claude.com and check the status of claude.ai, the API, and Claude Code. If an outage is listed, wait for the service to recover and don't change your VPN settings. If all components are working, check the error text, the selected country, your public IP, the limits, and your account.

An error about Claude being unavailable in your country does not mean your account is blocked. Check whether the selected country is on the official list of Claude supported countries.

A One-Minute Check

  1. Open status.claude.com and check the status of the component you need: claude.ai, the API, or Claude Code.
  2. If no outage is listed, read the full error text and find the matching case in the table above.
  3. Open another site with the VPN on. If it also fails, check your VPN client and internet connection.
  4. Check your public IP and make sure the selected country is on the official list of Claude supported countries.
  5. Open Claude in incognito mode. If the service works, clear the site data for claude.ai in your main browser.

VPN for Claude

If an outage is listed on the status page, don't reinstall Claude Code, don't clear your browser data, and don't change your VPN settings. These actions won't fix a problem on Anthropic's side.

If the service is working but shows a region error, select the nearest supported country and check your public IP. For claude.ai in a browser, you can use the extension. For Claude Desktop and Claude Code you need a system-wide VPN, since a browser extension doesn't affect their traffic.

VolnaLink

For claude.ai in a single browser, you can use the VolnaLink extension. For Claude Desktop and Claude Code, use the system-wide app. No separate plan is required for Claude. You can download the right version on the devices page.
