MegaFon, like other large carriers, has a mobile network and, in some regions, home internet. For a VPN these are two different scenarios, and the troubleshooting should start with figuring out which one you're on.
The Short Answer
If the connection won't establish, the first thing to do is change the location in the app. The second is to check whether another VPN's profile is still left in the system. These two steps account for most support requests.
What's Important to Know About the Mobile Network
Mobile internet is built fundamentally differently from wired internet, and these differences affect a VPN more than the carrier's brand does.
- A shared external address. Subscribers reach the outside through the carrier's gateway rather than each with their own address.
- A smaller packet size. The MTU on mobile networks is usually lower than on wired ones, which causes some connections to fragment and break.
- Mobility. Moving between towers changes the route and the external address, and with them tears down the established session.
- Regional differences. The network is built region by region, and conditions with the same carrier can differ between two cities. So a friend's experience in another city guarantees you nothing.
Common Situations and What They Mean
- It connects, but there's no internet. The tunnel is established but no traffic flows — usually fixed by changing the location. We cover this situation in a separate article.
- Works on Wi-Fi, doesn't work on mobile. This is a difference between networks, not a broken app, and is also covered separately.
- Disconnects on its own after a few minutes. Almost always battery saving on the device.
- Worked and then stopped. Network conditions change; still start with changing the location.
What to Try, in Order
- Change the location in the app. The most effective action: if a particular server doesn't get through the carrier's network, a neighboring one usually does.
- Check the internet without the VPN. Open any site with the VPN off. If it won't open either, the VPN isn't the issue: your plan's data has run out, there's no signal, or there's a problem on the network side.
- Check the list of VPN profiles in your device settings. Another service's configuration left in the system intercepts traffic and looks like a failure of the current app.
- Reconnect instead of waiting. The client may hold on to a dead connection, treating it as live.
- Remove battery-saving and data-saving restrictions for the app — especially on Android.
- Restart the device if the routes have "stuck."
MegaFon Home Internet
Test It on Your Own Device
8 hours free, no card required. Full access to all servers.
Where MegaFon provides a wired connection, the behavior is closer to ordinary home internet: the route is stable, and there are no drops from movement. If the problem occurs specifically there, look toward the router — filtering, custom DNS, a second VPN on the router itself, or old firmware.
What VolnaLink Can Do
There are apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Android TV, and Apple TV, plus extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. One subscription connects up to three devices at once. The first 8 hours are free and require no card — that's enough to test how it works on your own network rather than on someone else's promises.
Why There Are No Percentages or Charts Here
You won't find a number of tests, a success rate, or an average connection time in this article. The reason is simple: we haven't measured them yet, and we won't make such figures up — neither about our own service nor about others.
We're preparing our own monitoring separately: exactly how we'll measure is described on the "How We Test VPN Performance in Russia" page. Once enough measurements have accumulated, the results will appear in the monitoring and in this article in place of this paragraph.
If Nothing Helped
Write to support — no registration is needed for that. To keep the process from dragging on, state your carrier, city, connection type (mobile or home), app version, and selected location right away. With this information the issue is resolved in minutes instead of hours.
