VolnaLink VPN

VPN for Rostelecom

Rostelecom differs from the other providers on this list in that its core product is wired home internet. That is why troubleshooting VPN issues here revolves around the router rather than the specifics of a cellular network.

Short answer

On a home connection, the cause is most often the equipment in your apartment rather than the app. Check the router: filtering, its own DNS, a second VPN configured on it, and the firmware version. A quick test is to connect the same device to mobile internet.

How a wired connection differs from mobile

The differences work in your favor:

  • The route doesn't change. There are no handoffs between towers, which means no session drops caused by movement.
  • The packet size is larger. Less fragmentation than on a cellular network.
  • The speed is more stable. The channel isn't shared with neighboring subscribers the way the airwaves are.

In return, something appears that doesn't exist on mobile: a home router with its own settings, and sometimes with the provider's settings too.

What to check in the router

  1. Filtering and parental controls. These can be enabled by default and block some connections.
  2. Its own DNS. If the router has its own name servers set, the app may behave unpredictably.
  3. A second VPN on the router. Then traffic goes through two tunnels, and they interfere with each other.
  4. Firmware. Outdated firmware is an uncommon but real cause of intermittent drops.
  5. Operating mode. Some provider routers run in a mode where certain protocols are restricted.

If nothing changes after these checks, connect the device to mobile internet. If it works there, the cause is in your home network.

TV, console, and smart devices

On home internet this is the most common request: how to route through a VPN something you can't install an app on. The answer is to set up the VPN on the router. Then your entire home network goes through the tunnel: TVs, consoles, speakers, and everything else. In this case the router takes up one slot in the subscription rather than each device separately.

With VolnaLink this is supported on routers with OpenWrt; setup is manual — instructions are on the other devices page.

Mobile connectivity

Test it on your device

8 hours free, no card required. Full access to all servers.

If you also use mobile internet, the properties of a cellular network come into play there: a shared external address, a smaller packet size, drops when switching between towers. We cover mobile scenarios in a separate article.

What to try, in order

  1. Change the location in the app. The most effective step: if a specific server doesn't get through the provider's network, a nearby one usually does.
  2. Check the internet without VPN. Open any site with the VPN turned off. If it doesn't open either, the VPN isn't the problem: you've run out of plan data, there's no signal, or there's an issue on the network's side.
  3. Check the list of VPN profiles in your device settings. A leftover configuration from another service intercepts traffic and looks like a failure of your current app.
  4. Reconnect instead of waiting. The client may be holding a dead connection while treating it as alive.
  5. Remove battery-saver and data-saver restrictions for the app — especially on Android.
  6. Restart the device if the routes are stuck.

About VolnaLink

The service doesn't depend on your provider: the app works the same on any connection. There are versions for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, TVs, and browsers, plus manual setup on OpenWrt. The first 8 hours are free with no card.

Why there are no percentages or charts here

You won't find a number of tests, a success rate, or an average connection time in this article. The reason is simple: we haven't measured them yet, and we won't make such figures up — neither about our own service nor about others.

We're preparing our own monitoring separately: exactly how we'll measure it is described on the page “How we test VPN performance in Russia”. Once enough measurements accumulate, the results will appear in monitoring and in this article in place of this paragraph.

If nothing helped

Write to support — no registration is needed for that. To keep the process short, include your provider, city, connection type (mobile or home), app version, and selected location right away. With this information the issue gets resolved in minutes instead of hours.

FAQ

With the router: check filtering and parental controls, its own DNS, a second VPN configured on the router, and the firmware version. Then connect the device to mobile internet — if it works there, the cause is in your home network.

It depends on the model and firmware. Some routers issued by providers don't allow configuring a VPN client — in that case people install a separate router behind it.
As a rule, yes: the route doesn't change, the packet size is larger, and there are no drops from switching between towers. In return, a layer of the home router with its own settings is added.
Not yet. We publish only measured figures, and monitoring is still being prepared.
